About Us

These are Their Faces was started by Dr. Alie Scholes in 2019 as a response to the increasing prevalence of gun violence and the desensitization towards its victims. She was deeply affected by the way the media portrayed these tragedies, often reducing these lives to mere statistics and failing to convey the human impact of each incident. Through this project, Dr. Scholes aims to provoke empathy, spark conversations, and advocate for sensible gun safety legislation. She believes that art has the power to drive social change and hopes to transform grief into hope for a safer future, particularly for children.

The portraits are 15×15 inches and are made with Lego bricks. To us, this is a medium that echoes the innocence of childhood and is in direct contrast with the abhorrent nature of the gun violence culture in the United States. These portraits are made with photos supplied by family members who have been lefts behind by gun violence. There is no charge to the family.

We believe in a world where the devastating impact of gun violence is recognized but can be prevented. Our organization calls attention to the lives lost to gun violence by making a large-scale installation of facial portraits that will be on public display. Our mission is to use art as a powerful tool for education, advocacy, and remembrance.
